Gimme 'SHLTR,' the Bold New Magazine for Local Design Lovers

By

Finally, some good media news to report.

Inspired by Buckminster Fuller’s 1930s-era Shelter magazine, SHLTR is a modern-day “manifesto for inventive living.” It channels the West Coast’s innovative design spirit through a decidedly San Francisco Bay Area lens—one focused on all things architecture, interiors, craft, and technology.

The inaugural issue debuted in April and Issue 2 just dropped. The publishing schedule includes a monthly online newsletter and a bi-monthly digital flipbook; a print edition is scheduled for later in the year.

Along with injecting an aesthetic jolt into the Bay Area creative scene, SHLTR reunites readers with Zahid Sardar, the former decades-long architecture and design editor of the San Francisco Chronicle Sunday magazine. The renowned editor, curator, and writer's work has been featured in the likes of The New York Times, Dwell, and Metropolis, among others. He's also the author of several design books, and has taught design history at California College of the Arts.

SHLTR is clearly Sardar’s baby. The magazine’s design authority begins with its cover: the visual language is clear, the photography is striking, and the features are sharp and captivating.

“Design in the San Francisco Bay Area thrives on the unconventional…it’s a melting pot of innovation, sustainability, and subversion,”Sardar says. Our pages encapsulate this fearless energy, pushing the boundaries of architecture, interiors, landscape, industrial design, and the bold new frontier of AI-infused aesthetics. SHLTRis stepping in to fill a long-standing void, finally giving the Bay Area’s design voices the dedicated platform they deserve. At the same time, it offers readers a direct line to the region’s thriving creative industry, a gateway to the design-driven pulse of Silicon Valley."

Amen to that.

Those seeking creative inspiration and thought-provoking reads will surely find it here. We’re talking mouthwatering home tours and remodels, deep dives into architectural wonders both on and off the beaten path, and incisive profiles on brilliant design-world innovators, artists, and designers.

While Sardar is SHLTR’s driving force, he does not work alone. Tim Paschke, cofounder of the creative agency Paschke Dwyer, serves as creative director, and an impeccable crew of contributing writers, photographers, and industry advisors round out the talented team.

SHLTR is published in partnership with the Center for Architecture + Design, a nonprofit dedicated to creating a public-focused dialogue on architecture, design, and the built environment in the SF Bay Area.

It may be a newbie, but SHLTR already has plans to broaden its reach. Podcasts, real-life events, lectures, and the creation of a hub for the local design community are among the exciting things to come.
